You say you trust Medium to do the right thing. I trust Medium to WANT to do the right thing, but I’m not confident of Medium’s ability to do it.

The number of weird bugs I’ve seen in the algorithm that presents me with stories and the algorithm that calculates readership raises questions.

Why did I see the same 10 stories repeated over and over in my feed for an entire day? What changed and why was that change not tested properly?

Why can my claps outnumber my reads even though readers must scroll to the bottom of the story – effectively a read – in order to clap it? And does under-counting reads account for my decline in revenue and readership, even though my subscriptions are increasing at the same steady rate?

And as for the war on clickbait, how does Medium’s algorithm distinguish between appealing or popular writing and clickbait? Because clickbait is ultimately just content that people want to read. Is Medium actively promoting unappealing content over appealing content?
