Many of the stories about chastity belts are about husbands putting them on their wives before they went into battle.

It made me wonder if they were actually something women would wear for some hours, or a day or two, while the castle, citadel or town where they lived was under attack, to protect them from rape. The reasoning being that an enemy marauder finding a chastity belt in the way would move on to an easier target.
