I read somewhere that the erotic carvings on the outside of the temple at Khajuraho are there to make the sacred, chaste, decorations on the interior appear even more sacred and chaste. A visitor to the temple is confronted by all manner of things deemed offensive, then passes into the interior to be overwhelmed by peace and chastity.
